30-Minute Ride
By Ron Cummings

This a quick little thing that always made me laugh. I was going to Travis' house for the first time, and I had no driver's license. My father and stepmum were at work. I hated being alone. So Travis and Liz and Troy had me come over for the first time.

Liz and the gang showed up at my house in her little four-door, tan-ish colored Ford Taurus.. I think it was a Taurus. Anyway, Off we go. Remember, I live on Edwards St. We go up High Hill, past the hospital, past the Carney tree farm, past the Monogue's house up on the hill and we turn down this road. If you can call it a road. This was in the beginning of indoor track, so it was cold and the roads were messed up. But this road was a dirt road, and had pot holes from hell. It only took about 5 minutes to get to this road from my house..They only lived about two or three miles down this road. "Cool" I think.. "a couple minutes and we're there." Boy was I wrong.

This is also where I saw the relationship between Trav and Liz.

Liz turns onto this dirt road and comes to almost a complete stop. BUT, we're still moving. We were going about two miles an hour. But the funniest part was that Liz was SO serious looking, and at the same time dodging each and every pothole and frost heave. It took us almost thirty minutes to get to their house. The whole time, Travis was making fun of Liz, "We just got passed by a cripple." Or something along those lines. Liz would be smiling and laughing and saying, "Shut up Trav."

Everytime I would go past that road going to Passadumkeag to my Grams, I would remember that. What brought me to remember it now was, I came across a road a lot like that one today at work. Out in the woods and potholes for days. And I had to drive like good ol' Liz.

And I had a smile from ear to ear thinking about them.

By the way, Liz will probably deny all of this about her driving, but it's the truth.

Miss you all. Love you too. Ron Cummings
